Description

The church, reports the Bascapè, was consecrated in 1488 by the Bishop Antonio Caccia, supported by the Bishop of Novara Gerolamo Pallavicino. It underwent several changes in the seventeenth century, in the years 1873-1877 the nave of 11 meters was prolonged up
drawing by Ercole Marietti. In this place two fundamental works are preserved for the pictorial culture of the seventeenth century in the Novara area: the Last Supper (1595), preserved in the Chapel of the SS. Sacramento, a youthful work by Giovan Battista Crespi known as Il Cerano and, again attributed to Cerano, one
wooden sculpture depicting the Ecce Homo preserved in a side chapel. The sculpture, remembered in the eighteenth century by the scholar Lazzaro Agostino Cotta as a work of the master kept in the parish church,
it has been the object of study and of recent restoration and finally delivered to Crespi. The figure of Christ with bound wrists and the beautiful twist of the bust refers to the Christ the cross holder by Michelangelo Buonarroti in Santa Maria sopra Minerva in
Rome. But in this work the perfect proportion and coldness of Michelangelo's marble is translated into a highly dramatic language: a drama that can be read from the martyred face of Christ, from the blood that flows from the forehead that draws furrows on the face, then anatomy, carved to perfection, they make the Ecce Homo a masterpiece of wooden sculpture. The surprises in the church of Cerano are not over: at the bottom, behind the eighteenth-century altar in precious marbles, the beautiful polyptych by Sperindio Cagnoli depicting the Madonna and Child in the center, the Crucifixion at the top and the saints on the sides, in the compartments minors. A work
full of references to Gaudenzio Ferrari and the Milanese pictorial culture of the '500.
