Tamaulipas is one of the 31 states in Mexico, located in the north-eastern part of the country.

It is bordered to the south by the Veracruz, to the south-west by San Luis Potosí and to the west by the Nuevo León. It faces east over the Gulf of Mexico and to the north it borders with Texas, USA.

The name of the state derives from the word Tamaholipa a huasteco term; the tam prefix means "the place where" while there is no agreement among scholars on the meaning of the term holipa, even if the prevailing interpretation is "high hills".
