Description

The Company of Mozambique GCIC was a majestic company of the Portuguese colony of Mozambique, with sovereign rights delegated by the State. It had the concession of lands covering the present provinces of Manica and Sofala.

This company was founded in February 1891 with a capital of about $ 5 million from financiers from Germany, the United Kingdom and South Africa. The concession had a 50-year term, during which the company could, not only exploit resources and labor there (through the collection of taxes), but also sub-process parts of the territory. The Portuguese State would receive 7.5% of the Company's profits.

The Company had its headquarters in Beira, where it controlled the public administration and the post office,  and even created a private bank - Banco da Beira - which issued the currency denominated Libra.

During the Monarchy, one of its most notable Governors was Manuel Rafael Gorjão Henriques (1898-1900), to whom the population of Beira asked in September 1899 for "an increase in their taxes", as reported in the Diário de Moçambique of 6 of May of 1965. He was also its delegate administrator, until his death in 1914, the pair of the kingdom, Counselor of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs and university professor, António Eduardo de Sousa Azevedo Vilaça.

The 8 of December of 1939 was graced with the Grand Cross of the Order of the Colonial Empire.

On July 18, 1942, the territory of Manica and Sofala passed into direct administration of the colonial government and the Companhia de Moçambique, now under the name of SARL, continued to operate in the agro-industrial and commercial sectors. On October 20, 1961, the Company of Mozambique became the Commercial Entrepreneur Group of Mozambique. On September 6, 1972, it became a holding company, with the participation of several companies, Entreposto - Gestão e Participações (SGPS) , SA.
