Description

Ornamental border embellished with floral and zooformal motifs, picks, spades and other excavation tools. Filigree medallion with the profile of Francis I of Habsburg-Lorraine, Emperor of Austria and King of the Lombard-Veneto Kingdom and the words “Franc. Imp. Rex ”.

The company's history was closely linked to the emergence of railway projects and the growing demand for hard coal for steam engines in private industry and state-owned factories. The search for coal, peat and lignite in the Veneto provinces clearly reveals the existence of a conscious investment plan to remove the absolute dependence of Lombard-Veneto from British production. Conceived by a pool of retailers, bankers and industrialists - including the Bavarian businessman Friedrich Christian Oexle (1801-1864), permanently transplanted to Venice - the company promoted the subscription of 2,000 shares of 1,000 Lira each, even before to obtain government authorization in 1838. The company, born in a climate of widespread optimism, moved quickly to obtain permits for surveys in various mountain areas of the Veneto and Tyrol, engaging French, Prussian and Austrian workers. The initial results were very positive with a coal production from 1843 to 1858 of 94,000 tons and a net profit from 1846 to 1854 equal to about 20% of the invested capital. With the new company name of Società Veneta Montanistica, surveys were undertaken extending research to metal ores such as lead, mercury and silver. Between 1859 and 1862, one of the most critical years for the Venetian economy, he made new investments in Carnia in search of copper and silver. However, the huge financial effort was not compensated and, in 1870, the company closed the balance sheet with a huge loss. However, it remained until the dissolution, which occurred in 1897, thus representing one of the longest-lived enterprises among all those founded in the 1930s.
