The Barcelona City Council (in Catalan and officially, Ajuntament de Barcelona) is one of the four public administrations with political responsibility in the city of Barcelona, together with the General Administration of the State of Spain, the Generalitat of Catalonia and the Diputación de Barcelona. It has its historical origins in the Council of Hundred.
Since 1979, its political leaders have been chosen by universal suffrage by the citizens of Barcelona with the right to vote, in elections held every four years. At present its mayor is Ada Colau, who heads a government team made up of Barcelona en Comú and the PSC-PSOE.
