The economic crisis of 1887 devastated the Molfettese economy, especially the agricultural sector which, together with fishing, crafts and trade, represented the main local activity. The economic situation was compounded by the spread of the scourge of usury and the widening gap between the poorer and wealthier classes. The news that the people's banks that had sprung up in the north were mainly benefiting the workers raised the awareness of a group of citizens supported by the then Bishop Monsignor Pasquale Picone. Thus, on 7 June 1902, the Banca Cattolica Cooperativa di Molfetta was officially founded, whose first subscribers were mainly clergymen, professors, artisans and members of the petty bourgeoisie.
