Banca Popolare di Credito was founded in Bologna. Its main purpose is to offer cash advances to "hardworking and honest workers".
This type of charity was founded a few years earlier in Germany by Franz Hermann Schulze-Delitzsch and promoted in Italy by Luigi Luzzati.
The Bolognese bank will begin its activity, with the opening of offices and branches, in February 1866. The first president will be the Marquis Luigi Pizzardi, first director Lorenzo Salvi, Venerable of the "Galvani" Lodge.
It became Banca Popolare di Bologna and Ferrara in 1957 and ceased to exist in 1988, when it was absorbed by the Popolare di Milano. This institution is remembered by some as the first cooperative in the province of Bologna.
