Description

IG Farben (short for Interessen-Gemeinschaft Farbenindustrie AG, and also called IG. Farbenfabriken) was a German chemical company.

IG Farben was a conglomerate of German companies formed in 1925, some of which have been active since World War I. The name comes from the German word Farben, which means "paints", "dyes", or "colors". In fact, initially many of these companies produced dyes, but they soon began to devote themselves to increasingly advanced chemistry. Before World War I, German textile dye companies practically had a monopoly on the world market, which they lost during the conflict.

One solution to regain this record was to carry out a large merger. The founding of IG Farben was a reaction to Germany's defeat in the First World War. IG Farben held an almost total monopoly on chemical production during the period of Nazi Germany. The German chemical company was the financial heart of the Hitler regime and during the Holocaust it was the main supplier to the German government of Zyklon-B, the deadly substance used in the gas chambers of concentration camps. IG Farben was also one of the companies that most requested deportees as guinea pigs for experiments and tests of medicines of various kinds, by means of which nerve gas, methadone and other substances were invented (especially by Bayer, one of the constituent companies ).
