Description

The Companhia Nacional de Caminhos de Ferro, also known as Companhia Nacional, was a railway company in Portugal that built the Tua and Dão railways and operated the Corgo and Sabor railways.

History

On 22 November 1883 the competition for the construction and operation of the Tua-Mirandela railway had only one competitor Tristão Queirós, called the "Conde da Foz"; on 26 May 1884 he obtained a promise of a contract which became definitive on 30 June ; the approval of the concession was arranged on December 14, 1884. Given the complexity of the enterprise, the Queirós decided to found a company; on 1 October 1885 the "Companhia Nacional de Caminhos de Ferro" was born in Lisbon, to which it granted the government concession for the construction and operation of the Tua railway . The decree of October 1 included the company statutes and also attached the transfer of the concession of the Dão railway.

The Mirandela line was opened for business on 29 September 1887. The Dão railway was inaugurated on 25 November 1890.

Later the company tried, without success, to find the capital needed to participate in the tender for the continuation of the Tua su Bragança line; therefore he could not access it directly . In 1903, having obtained the transfer of the concession from João Lopes da Cruz, he built the line up to Bragança by December 31, 1906.

The "Companhia" takes over the management of the Sabor and Corgo railways.

In 1927 the lines of the Caminhos de Ferro do Estado were integrated into the Companhia dos Caminhos de Ferro Portugueses; the narrow-gauge concession lines were also included. Given the peculiarities of the operation of these railways on March 11, an agreement was established with the "Companhia Nacional" to also exercise the lines of the Corgo and the Sabor.

The agreement became operational following the contract of 27 January 1928.
Company extinction

Following the economic difficulties of the previous thirty years, the law 2008 was issued in 1945 which, as part of a general plan for the reorganization of transport, incorporated all the previous railway concessions in the Companhia dos Caminhos de Ferro Portugueses alone. The definitive transfer, which marked the end of the Companhia Nacional, took place in 1946 and entered into force on 1 January 1947.
