The railway's history dates back to 1908, when the first plans were submitted for its transformation into a standard-gauge electric railway. After some difficulties and changes of management, work began in 1928, but was interrupted in 1934 due to financial problems. In 1959, the Ferrotramviaria Società Anonima Italiana took over the concession and continued steam operation until 1964, when the line was electrified and adapted to the standard gauge.
The railway is electrified and standard gauge, with double track and single track sections. The rolling stock includes electromotors, locomotives and medium-distance coaches. The line is used for both passenger and freight transport, although the latter has decreased over the years.
Over the years, several improvement and expansion projects have been carried out on the line, including doubling the track to Ruvo di Puglia and burying the tracks in the town of Andria. Some of the important stations along the route include Bitonto, Terlizzi, Ruvo di Puglia, Corato and Barletta.
Today, the Bari-Barletta railway is one of the main communication routes in the Apulian region, serving a vast area and offering important connections between various locations.
