1883 - GINNASTICA E SCHERMA SOC. - NOVARA
Società storica sportiva costituita in data 13 maggio 1883

In the mid-1800s, gymnastic teaching spread beyond a military academy, this movement led to the creation of gyms and sports clubs throughout the peninsula. Even Novara is interested in this discipline, in 1878 the "Novarese Society of gymnastic and skating fencing" was founded, chaired by the Marquis Luigi Tornielli, to which most of the wealthy people of the city had joined without the commitment to practice sports. This institution is dissolved the following year, probably due to a lack of participation by the members.

Description

The Pro Novara Gymnastics Company is a multi-sports club based in Novara, founded in 1881; it is divided into two distinct companies affiliated with the Italian Gymnastics Federation and the Italian Fencing Federation.

The population's desire to practice sports disciplines led a group of students and shop assistants to found a gymnastics and fencing company. On May 26, 1881, the "Novara Gymnastics Society" was born, a name modified immediately after in "Society of Gymnastics and Fencing" as shown in its statute. On September 19, Cesare Andreoni was appointed temporarily as director and as deputy director Attilio Boggione. The company was open to all young people who had reached the age of 14; the registration fee was Lire 3. The social uniform for the competitions adopted is "white and blue stripes with half sleeves". The first athletes to be noticed in the various disciplines are: Ferrario, Bertelli, Garetti, Monetti and Morandotti, who in 1884, first in a competition in Vercelli and then in Vigevano, established themselves at the bar and the rings; while Stefanino Siro made his mark in fencing.

The first seat was the deconsecrated church, called "Santa Croce", which stood exactly on the corner of Corso Mazzini - Baluardo Massimo D'Azeglio, specially used as a gym and later demolished to expand the Maggiore Hospital. In 1887, during the Rome Gymnastics Competition, Antonio Morandotti, Varzi Menotti, the Lazzarini and Lavatelli brothers performed before King Umberto I and the Prince of Naples, future king Vittorio Emanuele III. While Attilio Boggione competed in fencing. In 1888 the statute was modified to reflect the rules of the newly formed National Gymnastics Federation and to allow the affiliation of the Novara association. Meanwhile, the "Gymnastics and Fencing" participates in various national competitions immediately putting themselves in view with their athletes and also receiving an invitation to participate in competitions outside national borders. Like many sports clubs the sections begin to increase according to the disciplines that attract the interest of sportsmen and for this reason also at the "Gymnastics and Fencing" the athletic section opens in 1897, which included fight and weightlifting, and the cyclists ( 1901).

Among the valid representatives of the athletic section we can mention: Umberto Barozzi Italian champion in the 100 m. floors and in the 250 m. obstacles in 1906 and in the 100 m. and 400 m. in 1907 and Italian record holder on the 100 meters, Guido Brignone Italian champion in the 100 m. and 400 m. in 1909 and a record holder in the 100 meters in ex aequo with his teacher Barozzi, Giacomo Omodei third in the 1500 meters at the Italian championships in the same year and Virgilio Né in the fight and weightlifting, the Italian champion in the fight in 1904. He participated for the "Gymnastics and Scherma ”also Massimo Cartasegna, winner of 5 Italian titles, after the Audace Torino had shifted its activity towards the foot-ball. Other good athletes were Achille Bellomi in the javelin, Primo Perassoni in the pole vault and Cesare Daverio in the long distances.

In 1901 there was a split in the society and the "Forza e Speranza" was founded, with the sections of gymnastics, athletics. The two societies expressed different political ideas, the "Gymnastics and Fencing" was of liberal tendencies, but closer to the monarchists and nationalists, while the "Force and Hope" was closer to the radical-cavallottian or left Giolittian movement.

The foot-ball begins to interest the masses, and even in Novara football teams are formed. The "Gymnastics and Fencing" opens the section in 1908 adopting a red jacket while the "Strength and Hope" in 1910 and uses a white jacket. Both concluded their football activity after their best athletes were chosen by Novara.
