The Banco di San Giorgio (officially Casa delle Compere e dei Banchi di San Giorgio), founded in 1407, was the first bank in the world.
The Banco was active when the Republic of Genoa excelled among the ancient Maritime Republics and remained in operation well beyond the late Middle Ages, until the Napoleonic era (1805), when it was refounded in 1987 under its current name Banco di San Giorgio.
