The first railway lines built by the Società Imperiale Reale Privilegiata delle Strade Ferrate Meridionali were those between Milan and Venice, and between Milan and Bologna. Later, the network was expanded to include other important cities such as Verona, Padua, Brescia, Bergamo and Mantua.

During the period in which the company operated, the Lombardo-Veneto kingdom was part of the Austrian Empire. However, after the Second Italian War of Independence in 1859 and the Third Italian War of Independence in 1866, the region was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy. As a result, the company came under the control of the new Italian government.
